Privacy policy
Effective October 22, 2026
This policy explains how the ReaderNext app for Android (“the app”) and the website readernext.com handle information. Both are provided by NextOne Labs LLC (“we”, “us”, “our”). If you have a question, see Contact below.
- Your books stay on your device. Books, documents, highlights, notes and saved articles are stored on your phone or tablet and are never uploaded to us.
- No accounts and no analytics. We don’t ask for your name, email address or phone number, and we don’t run servers that store information about you.
- The free version shows ads through Google AdMob. Google processes your advertising ID, device information and ad interactions. Personalised ads are shown only with your consent where the law requires it. ReaderNext Pro has no ads.
- Purchases go through Google Play. We never receive your payment details.
- We receive something only when you choose to send it: an AI answer you report with “Report this answer”.
Your books and documents
When you add a book or document, by choosing files, picking a folder or sharing a file to the app, ReaderNext copies it into the app’s private storage on your device so it keeps working if the original moves. Everything the app does with it, including showing pages, searching, recognising the text of scanned pages and reading it aloud, happens on your device. Your books and their contents are not sent to us or to anyone else.
The app opens only files and folders you choose through Android’s document picker. It does not ask for access to all of your files.
Information stored on your device
To work, the app keeps information in its private storage on your device, which we cannot access:
- your library: books, covers, shelves, series and the folders you chose,
- your reading places, bookmarks, highlights, notes, tags and reading statistics,
- “Your words” (words you looked up and their sentences) and dictionaries you import,
- saved articles and their images,
- your settings, such as themes, fonts, voices and your privacy choices, and whether you have ReaderNext Pro.
You can delete books, notes and articles in the app. Everything is deleted when you clear the app’s data or uninstall the app, except copies you saved elsewhere yourself (see the next sections).
Backups and moving to a new phone
- Android backup. If backup is turned on for your device, Android’s Auto Backup copies your settings, reading places, highlights, notes, shelves, stats and Your words (but no book files, covers or articles) to your Google account’s backup, so they can come back on a new phone. Google stores this backup under its own privacy policy; we cannot access it. You can turn backup off in your device’s settings.
- Phone-to-phone transfer. When you use Android’s transfer tool to move to a new device, your whole library, including books and articles, can be copied directly to the new device.
- Backup files. If you use Settings → Backup, the app writes a backup file to a place you choose. It stays wherever you put it, and is governed by that storage provider’s terms if it is in the cloud.
Sync folder or sync file (optional)
With ReaderNext Pro you can choose a sync folder, or create or open a single sync file, to keep devices in step. The app writes your reading places, bookmarks, highlights, notes and shelves there (not your book files) and reads changes from your other devices. The folder or file is in storage you choose, on your device or in a cloud drive app such as Google Drive. ReaderNext talks only to the Android document provider; it never sends this information to us. If the location is in a cloud service, that provider’s own privacy policy applies. You can stop syncing at any time in Settings and delete the folder or file yourself.
Saving web articles
When you share a link to ReaderNext, or import links from another read-later service’s export file, the app fetches that page and its images directly from the website that hosts them, much like a web browser does. That website receives your IP address, a standard browser identification string and the request itself, and handles them under its own policies. The app keeps no cookies after the page is saved and sends no information about you. Saved articles are then stored on your device. We never see which pages you save.
Listening (text-to-speech)
Read-aloud uses the text-to-speech engine installed on your device, such as Speech Services by Google or another engine you chose in Android’s settings. The app passes the text being read to that engine on your device. ReaderNext does not send it anywhere, but the engine is provided by its own developer and is governed by that developer’s privacy policy. Google’s engine, for example, may download voice data and may send usage statistics to Google, depending on its settings. Audio files you create with “Save as audio” are saved where you choose.
Translation, text recognition and on-device AI
ReaderNext uses Google ML Kit, which runs on your device, for translating a selection, identifying its language and recognising the text of scanned PDF pages, and, on phones that support it, Google’s on-device Gemini Nano model for AI summaries, explanations and answers. The text you translate, recognise or ask about is processed on your device and is not sent to us or to Google by the app.
Translation language packs are downloaded from Google the first time you use a language. Text recognition and AI models are delivered and updated by Google Play services. To deliver, measure and improve these services, Google may collect diagnostic and usage information, for example the ML Kit features used, their performance, error reports, device and app information and an installation identifier, and send it through Google’s Firebase data transport. This information does not include your books, the text you process or the AI’s answers. Google handles it under the Google Privacy Policy.
AI answers are generated by a model and can be wrong. Please don’t rely on them for medical, legal, financial or other important decisions.
“Report this answer”
Every AI answer has a Report button, so you can tell us about answers that are offensive, harmful, sexual, wrong or otherwise inappropriate. Nothing is sent unless you tap Report, choose a reason and confirm. The app shows you exactly what will be sent first. A report is sent over an encrypted connection to readernext.com/api/ai-report and contains only:
- the AI answer you are reporting (up to 8,000 characters),
- the reason you chose and your optional note (up to 500 characters),
- which AI feature produced it (for example, summary or explanation) and the model name,
- the app name and version, your device’s manufacturer and model, and its Android version.
It never contains your book, the passage, your question or any account or device identifier. We store reports in a database hosted by our infrastructure provider, Cloudflare, and receive a copy by email, so we can review AI output and improve these features. We do not store your IP address with a report. Cloudflare processes it briefly to deliver the request and to limit abuse. Please don’t put personal information in the note. Because reports aren’t linked to you, we can’t look up a report later unless you tell us enough about it (for example, its date and text) for us to find it. We then delete it on request.
Purchases and subscriptions
ReaderNext Pro is sold through Google Play Billing, and Google handles the payment. The app receives from Google Play only the status of your purchase (for example, that a subscription is active or that you bought the lifetime option) and a purchase token, and uses them to unlock Pro and restore your purchase. The app keeps a note on your device that you have Pro. We do not receive your name, email address or payment details. Google processes your purchase under the Google Privacy Policy.
Advertising
The free version of the app shows ads from Google AdMob: a banner in the Library and Saved lists, an occasional full-screen ad after a long reading session, and short videos you can choose to watch to use a Pro feature once. Ads never appear while you are reading or listening. ReaderNext Pro has no ads.
To show ads, measure them and prevent fraud, the Google Mobile Ads SDK in the app collects and sends to Google:
- your device’s advertising ID and other device identifiers,
- your IP address, from which an approximate location may be derived,
- device information, such as model, operating system, language, screen and network type,
- ad interactions, such as which ads were shown or tapped, and diagnostic information about the ads.
Google uses this information as described in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services. The app never gives Google, or any advertiser, your books, notes, saved articles or anything you read.
Consent and your choices. The app uses Google’s User Messaging Platform to ask for your consent where the law requires it, for example in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. Personalised ads are shown only if you agree; otherwise Google shows non-personalised or limited ads, which still use some device information to work and to prevent fraud. Where US state privacy laws apply, you can opt out of the use of your information for targeted advertising. You can review or change your choices at any time in the app under Settings → Privacy → Privacy choices (shown where consent applies). You can also reset or delete your advertising ID in your device’s settings.
This website
readernext.com uses no cookies, analytics, advertising or trackers, and loads nothing from other websites. It stores one preference in your browser, your choice of light or dark theme. Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes technical information such as your IP address and browser type to deliver pages and protect the site from abuse, under its own policies. We do not use this information to identify you. A link to Google Play takes you to Google’s site, where Google’s policies apply.
Legal bases (EEA, UK and Switzerland)
Where the GDPR or a similar law applies, we rely on: performance of a contract, to provide the app and the purchases you make; your consent, for personalised advertising (you can withdraw it at any time in Privacy choices); and our legitimate interests, to show non-personalised ads that fund the free version, to review reported AI answers, and to keep the app and site secure. Google acts as an independent controller for the information its services process.
Sharing and selling
We do not sell your personal information and we have none to sell: we don’t operate servers that store information about you. The only information that leaves your device does so as described above: to Google for ads, purchases, backups and ML Kit, to the websites you save articles from, to the cloud service you choose for sync or backup files, and to us when you report an AI answer. Under some US state laws, the advertising information Google collects in the free version may count as “sharing” for cross-context behavioural advertising; you can opt out as described under Advertising, or remove ads with ReaderNext Pro.
Data retention
Information on your device stays until you delete it, clear the app’s data or uninstall the app. Backups, sync files and backup files stay where they are stored until you delete them. AI answer reports are kept as long as we need them to review and improve the AI features. Google keeps purchase, advertising, backup and diagnostic information for the periods described in its own policies.
Security
Your library is protected by your device’s own security. Every network connection the app makes uses HTTPS: release builds of the app refuse unencrypted connections and upgrade web links to HTTPS.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, including under the GDPR, the UK GDPR and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and other US state laws, you may have the right to know what personal information is processed about you, to access, correct, delete or receive a copy of it, to object to or restrict its use, to withdraw consent, and to opt out of targeted advertising, without being treated differently for using these rights. Because your information stays on your device, you control most of it directly in the app. For advertising choices, use Privacy choices and your advertising ID settings. For anything we hold, such as an AI answer report, contact us and we will respond within the time the law requires. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
The app and website are general-audience products and are not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children, and ads in the app are not set up for children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, for example in an AI report note, contact us and we will delete it.
International transfers
We are based in the United States. Google and Cloudflare may process information in the United States and other countries, using the safeguards described in their own policies, such as Standard Contractual Clauses.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update this page and its effective date. If a change significantly affects how your information is handled, we will also tell you in the app.
